pamela z - a delay is better

.:: This is the first CD devoted exclusively to works by the "funny, inventive, and talented" (Village Voice) composer/performer Pamela Z. The CD, which offers some of her most widely enjoyed signature pieces, is "an impressive survey of Z's imaginative compositions," states Pauline Oliveros.

The San Francisco Chronicle enthusiastically notes that "Z creates lustrous sonic landscapes." The essence of Z's mesmerizing music is a skillful blending of her lovely voice with refined electronic manipulations. Oliveros finds that "this CD beguiles us with a rich introduction to a fine vocalist/composer who adeptly embraces technology" and who "invigoratingly explores" a wide variety of materials.

Some of the CD's dozen pieces draw on everyday sounds. For example, the percussion loops in Bone Music are built up from the performer pounding an empty five-gallon water bottle, while the pieces The MUNI Section and NEMIZ use sampled San Francisco street sounds. The witty Geekspeak manipulates recordings of computer engineers providing us with the definitive word on the differences between nerds and geeks.

Other pieces use found text, such as Pop Titles 'You' (based on titles of popular songs), while some pieces use only Z's voice, such as Badagada and Number 3.

Z has toured extensively around the world, and she has composed commissioned works for such new music ensembles as the Bang on a Can All Stars, the California E.A.R. Unit, and St. Luke's Chamber Orchestra.

owen - at home with owen

||| RESPOTED BY REQUEST |||
||| AWESOME !!! |||

.:: On At Home With Owen, Chicago's Mike Kinsella (Cap'n Jazz, Joan of Arc, American Football, Owls), the sole creative output behind Owen, figuratively leaves the at-home bedroom that has characterized so much of Owen's past musical output. Along the way, he finds true love, gains (and then loses) some weight, subscribes to cable television and endures the death of a parent. And then he writes a new record about the process, detailing the many transformations in his life.

From an artist whom has, in the past, recorded entire albums in his childhood bedroom berating lost love and personal missteps, it's a new chapter. The end result is At Home With Owen, a new extension in the lineage of Owen’s music. And being at home with one's self never sounded so freeing.

.:: In the past decade, Chicago's Mike Kinsella has played a variety of instruments in a handful of bands including Cap'n Jazz, Joan of Arc, The One Up Downstairs, American Football, Owls, Maritime, and Aloha. Owen is his solo project.

The impetus for Owen was a direct result of the demise of American Football. Up to that point, having been associated with a number of bands, Mike sought a project where he could have complete creative control over all aspects including songwriting, recording, album artwork, and overall artistic direction.

When it came time to record his solo album, Mike approached Polyvinyl with the idea to take the money that normally would be spent on a recording studio and instead spend it on software so he could record the album on his own. He ended up heading to his mother's house in Chicago and turned his old bedroom into a recording studio. Wishing to avoid the connotations associated with solo singer-songwriters, Mike began recording under the pseudonym, 'Owen.'

efterklang - parades

.:: Parades is the highly anticipated second album by Denmark’s Efterklang, the follow up to their underground hit of 2004, Tripper.

Comprising 11 majestic, otherworldly pop songs, Parades manages to be both magnificently ambitious and engagingly intimate; a breathtaking panorama of sound with few clear antecedents. Music with no boundaries. In a parallel universe, songs like ‘Mirador’ and ‘Caravan’ would be number one forever…

Though the music that became Parades was recorded concurrently with the critically acclaimed (and already collectible) Under Giant Trees mini-album that preceded it in April, the latter was essentially a summation of songs the band had pieced together on tour in 2005.

Parades is cut from a different cloth: this is all new material spun from raw ingredients, carefully stitched and lovingly embroidered with fine detail. If you let yourself be enveloped, this living tapestry could take years to unpick.

Unlike previous recordings, the band relied less on digital techniques and went for a palatial sound by recording in large rooms. A boys’ choir and a church organ were recorded in a church, while other instruments were recorded in their studio bathroom and hallway; others in an echo chamber.

Darren Allison (who worked on My Bloody Valentine’s Loveless, and Ladies and Gentlemen… by Spiritualized – records that surely need no introduction) mixed the album on analogue equipment with Efterklang’s Mads Brauer, distinguishing the minutiae of sound while keeping the bigger picture of each song firmly in focus.

Parades features similarly lavish artwork to Under Giant Trees, by Danish artists Hvass&Hannibal and UFEX. Like a day-glo Hieronymus Bosch, the design carries through the musical idea of minuscule detail on an epic scale.

Efterklang will take their stunning eight-person live show on a World tour this autumn that will continue until late next year, with numerous festival appearances planned for summer 2008.

Like a gigantic piece of musical theatre, Parades is a remarkable achievement, dense and diverse, and clearly a lot of fun to put together. You’ve never heard anything like it.

symbiosis - v.a.

.:: Following selection for the Qwartz Label Award, our foremost intention was to create something special, in order to celebrate an acknowledgment of the utmost importance.
This is how Symbiosis (a compilation of exclusive unreleased Zymogen tracks) was conceived.

It is a reunion of the artistic voices that have collaborated with us in the past, those that are collaborating with us now, and an invitation to those that might collaborate with us in future.

It is yet another example of our dedication to providing creative excellence for more than a year and a half to date, and it is also an occasion for us to show that which constitutes our aesthetic values, as well as that which represents the probable direction of our evolution. It is what a project such as Zymogen cannot, and could not, ever ignore or take for granted.

Symbiosis is all this: the past, present, and future...but most importantly, it is the Zymogen sound. It is music that changes in the course of the twelve tracks constituting the album, in the same way that the twelve Zymogen releases, to date, are different and evolve with respect to each other.

Despite this, there is always a fine red thread that binds and holds closely together the diverse and sometimes distant styles, all of which exude a distinct artistic personality.

The concept is always the same, but the language changes depending on whom it is expressed to.

Symbiosis represents all that Zymogen is, and all that Zymogen could be or might become. Zymogen

marihiko hara - cesura

.:: Marihiko Hara is a member of the artist collective Rimacona-Lab. He composes sound-based works, reflecting on the strength of silence.

His work "untitled" was selected by "Festival Confluencias 2005" held in Spain. Also, he is a member of the experimental-pop duo Rimacona with Natsuko Yanagimoto.

During summer 2006 Rimacona organised a concert as an opening event of "Feu Nos Peres -Japanese Migrants in New-Caledonia-" by Mutsumi Tsuda at Tjibaou Caltural Center in New-Caledonia. Since 2007 Rimacona's concert has been on in Yokohama, Fukuoka, Kyoto and Okinawa.

Cesura, Hara's debut album, emits melodies that have been compressed into subtle layers and thin sound-scapes.

The piano is his trademark, and when coupled with the other acoustic instruments he employs, we get digital samples that float endlessly via loops and high frequencies throughout the entire album, as in 'Sleep', 'Cesura', and 'Konstellation'.

Silence is the other vitally important element of 'Cesura'. It is often balanced with drones and white noise (as in 'Vision', 'Spectrum', 'Consonance', and 'Ripple') and is treated as an active part of the sound Hara makes. It serves as the basic color of the canvas, which he slowly fills with thin colored stokes.

On the final track, entitled 'modena', Hara collaborates with Natsuko Yanagimoto: a vocalist and second half of the experimental-pop duo, Rimacona. Here, an over-processed voice is surrounded by flickering sounds, which resonate intimate tones and an overall emotive atmosphere.

Marihiko Hara designs minimal sound sculptures with poetry and soul, gives weight to pauses, and breaths life into silences and melodies without emphasis.
Cesura is such poetry.

iambic² - as the snow fell

.:: iambic² is an electronic music act based in London, UK which was created by Guy Andrews in 2004.

The music is based around the ambient genre but fuses elements of many other styles together including Jazz, Soundscape, IDM, Post-Rock and Break Beat to create a new and evocative sound.

.:: One year after his very well acclaimed debut "Under These Stars, We'll Sleep Again", Guy Andrews aka "iambic²" is back with his new full length release "As The Snow Fell" - a calmed down collage of rather cold ambient pieces on the one hand and warm songwriter refinement on the other.

If Conor Oberst and Múm made an illegitimate son while listening to Aphex Twin’s SAW2 - they’d have to call it "iambic²". Enjoy! iambic²

d'incise - capharnaüm

.:: This 5 tracks album of swiss artist D'incise shows, in an eclectic and coherent way, the universes and atmospheres he evolved in during spring and summer 2007.

With inspiration and experiences ranging from almost ambient improvisations to musique concrete, passing through free noise and abstract audio-acoustic experiments, and his use of sounds from daily life or more special occasions (including a culture of rats neurons), D'incise offers three quarters of dense and sometimes frightening avant-garde music.

D'incise is a member of the audioactivity collective from geneva. in 2002 he starded to produce different kinds of electronic music, from dub to electronica, dangerously sliding to the more experimental ways of electroacoustic.

His world is made with sound fractures, nevralgic crepitations, melancolic atmospheres and a non-dissimulated fascination for rust and faded rhythms.

bernier & trottier - objet abandonné en mer

.:: The “Objet abandonne en Mer”-EP consists of four tracks with the title track being sub-divided in parts one to three. Opener “Harmattan” starts with a loop of rhythmically ordered glitches. Two entangled layers of acoustic guitar burst in, the slide-guitar rises and invokes an intense feeling of being lost.

Bow and synthesizer replace the slide until an acoustic guitar introduces a simple Folk-melody. “Objet abandonne en Mer” is dominated by diverse field-recordings and crackling glitches. The feeling of being lost created in the first song is altered to a vague idea of rolling with the waves.

The electro-acoustic cacophony of the introduction gives rise to a calm guitar melody. For the end, a thousand small Herzog-style guitars arise and consume the spectrum 'till single tones and chords begin to establish on top.

The third track opens with a nice Blues-motive on electric guitar and Nicolas' trademark noises. The initial melody disappears in reverb while a diffuse second layer gains contour beneath the surface.

Just before the 1.000 Hours of Staring-similarity become too evident, a firm and catchy guitar emerges to make you hum along. Something like the album's dramaturgic peak. “Bourrasque” afterwards is the final tune.

Mainly made of Simon's wonderful guitars, the songs starts with a lot of them piled up efficiently. After all, one singular Folk-melody survives just to drown in the sound of seagulls, oceanic hissing, noise and the distance echoes of Nicolas' and Simon's voices. More than just intriguing.

konntinent - all lines lead in

.:: It is always a pleasure to introduce a new name to the site, and Konntinent is no exception. Hailing from London, Konntinent (also known as Antony Harrison) arrives in true style with a four track EP of hauntingly beautiful soundscapes.

'All lines lead in' is a wholly remarkable EP, particularly striking is Konntinent's ability to weave a story into his music - the EP conveys a very definite feeling of beginning, middle and end, visiting upon eerie and unsettling amalgams of strings and field recordings, to incredibly delicate melodies picked out on guitar.

The tracks build out of static and lost radio frequencies into shimmering, hazy pieces of blissful music, hanging in the air like some delicate mist before disappearing on the next wave of hum and white noise.

On repeated listens, it is fascinating how quickly Konntinent's own unique sound becomes apparent - music that is seemingly familiar quickly establishes itself as being very unique. The more you listen the more there is to uncover, and that for me makes this a true gem, not to be overlooked.

my first trumpet - frerk

.:: Kevin "ClickClickDecker" Hamann is showing a slightly different side of his musical life. As "My first trumpet" he is enjoying a new freedom, not known from his many other projects. Quite hard to put into a certain genre, the album FRERK combines a couple of modern styles, all under the melody tree.

FRERK is a bedroom- and first trial production, never losing its beauty for melodic moments

.:: The album is absolutely astonishing. Kevin is a man with an undoubtedly feel for melodies and striking Pop sensibility. The LP is made of 14 scribbled songs, none of them processed more than necessary. Clever Indiepop-tracks like "Digital Contact", "Eat Some Beaf Chief", "Max B." and "Dipl. Link" work at first try and last for weeks.

One-man band Hamann plays guitars, drums, synthesizers, glockenspiel and one hundred instruments more. Tracks "Happy Plingi" or "Muerz" show up with a poppy Postrock-approach, not unlike Mice Parade. Other tunes will make you think of the Postal Service or New York City's Ratatat. Hmmm...

The CDr is limited to 100 copies. It contains the brand new boni "Im Wald" and "Halbe Liter". Kevin will sell the CDs at his concerts, but the only chance to get them online is here.

The delightful artwork was crafted by Aerotone top-designer meedchen. The sleeves look fantastic! Only to celebrate this album, Sven Swift recently thought of a new kind of package.

eyvind kang - athlantis

.:: What if the entire history of Western Christian mysticism, William Blake, plainsong, Tantum Ergo, polyphony, Renaissance dance, Baroque, German Romanticism, Gamelan, South Indian classical, Japanese folk song, Icelandic chill-out, Olivier Messiaen, Alva Noto, microtonalism, Samuel Barber, Daniel Lanois without the cheese, Native American, Appalachian, Scottish folk, North African Berber, Nu-pop, ambient drone, Minimalism, Industrial, beat poetry, cosmic consciousness, post-rock, Toronto Indie Apocalypse, Van Dyke Parks, chamber jazz, Richard Strauss, Gustav Mahler, Gustav Holst, The Beach Boys, Sun Ra, Eric Satie, Heitor Villa Lobos, Phillip Glass, and New Music sensibilities were all to be assimilated, processed, deconstructed, and retrieved in one enormous, death-defyingly gorgeous, show-stoppingly virtuosic yet eminently listenable and instantly accessible disc?

That's a pitiful attempt to capture in words what is going on in this absolutely astounding album, certainly a landmark, a watershed in the history of recorded music. Just the shear scope of the soundscape boggles the mind. A basic six-piece unit (Michael White, violin; Mike Patton, voice, electronics; Tim Young, electric guitar; Tucker Martine, live sound processing; Evan Schiller sound movements; and Evyind Kang, violin and composer) is augmented by a sixteen-piece orchestra featuring woodwinds, brass, strings, acoustic and electric guitar, keyboards, accordion, percussion, and drums.

Kang has written some absolutely mesmeric compositions featuring all of the styles noted in the first paragraph, which are then arranged and played in a most compelling and beguiling manner. Certainly the inclusion of such noted sound manipulators as Patton, Schiller, and Martine contribute greatly to the sweep and grandeur of the musical palette. But perhaps the most salient fact about this disc is that it is a live recording, albeit, thankfully, with none of the annoying audience interruptions that all too frequently accompany such undertakings.

plaistow - los criminales reciclados en conductores de autobuses

.:: Plaistow Trio's music goes through all extremes. Sometimes close to silence, sounds and gestures slackened, we get near an idea of calm and contemplative meditation.

The feeling to be able to compose with a slow progress of time. And then, at some point, a kind of anger is given voice, just like in a brief scratch or in a long howling. Here forms are neglected, there is a will to get out of style and decency, a will to adopt an attitude both offhanded and intense.

jóhann jóhannsson - virðulegu forsetar

.:: This is Johann's second album for Touch, after the highly acclaimed 'Englabörn'. 'Virthulegu forsetar' contains one hour-long piece for 11 brass players, percussion, electronics, organs and piano. It's presented as an ordinary stereo CD and as a DVD-Audio with a high resolution 5.1 surround mix.

The piece had its live debut in Hallgrimskirkja, a large church in Reykjavik and the city's towering edifice, and was named "the most memorable musical event of 2003" in Iceland's leading newspaper.

The piece has 'Englabörn's' quiet, elegiac beauty, but abandons the brevity of the first album's exquisite miniatures in favor of an extended form that reveals a long, slow process. A simple theme played by the brass section is repeated throughout the entire piece using different voicings and instrumentation.

As the piece goes on, the tempo slows down, until it is extremely slow. Around the middle of the piece, the tempo starts to speed up again, until it reaches the original tempo.

'Virthulegu forsetar' is performed by the Caput Ensemble, conducted by Gudni Franzson, with Skuli Sverrison on bass and electronics, Matthias M.D. Hemstock on bells, glockenspiel and electronics, Hordur Bragason and Gudmundur Sigurdsson on organs and Johann Johannsson on piano and electronics.
